The big larch
At Balavaux, on a mountain pasture high above Nendaz overlooking the Rhône valley, you'll find a forest of centuries-old larches, some of which can be a respectable 800 years old. They are the largest in Europe, some reaching 12 metres in circumference.
Not long ago, one of these venerable trees was struck by lightning and burst into flames from the inside. The sight is astonishing. And from the inside, it almost looks like a tribute to Giger, who also recently passed away.
